The Dragon Ride 2027<\/strong> will bring thousands of cyclists back to the spectacular roads of South Wales for one of the UK’s toughest and most established cycling sportives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next edition takes place on Sunday, 13 June 2027<\/strong>, with riders heading into the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) for a day of long climbs, spectacular scenery and serious endurance riding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than 4,800 cyclists participated in 2026<\/strong>, and Dragon Ride 2027 will have an additional attraction: riders will climb Rhigos Mountain<\/strong>, which is also scheduled to feature in Stage 3 of the 2027 Tour de France Grand D\u00e9part in Wales<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether you’re considering the Cymru Classic or attempting the enormous Dragon Devil, preparing your bike, gearing, nutrition and equipment properly can make a significant difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This guide explains what you need to know before taking on the Dragon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Dragon Ride 2027: Date and Key Information<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Dragon Ride 2027 takes place on Sunday, 13 June 2027<\/strong> in South Wales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event traditionally starts and finishes at Margam Park near Port Talbot<\/strong>, before taking riders towards the mountains of Bannau Brycheiniog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dragon Ride offers four different challenges<\/strong>, allowing riders to choose anything from a demanding sub-100 km sportive to an extreme endurance challenge approaching 300 km.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The organisers have confirmed that four distances will again be available in 2027, although the final 2027 routes are yet to be confirmed<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dragon Ride 2027 Routes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For reference, the four route options used for the latest edition are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cymru Classic \u2014 99 km \/ approximately 1,350 m climbing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Medio Fondo \u2014 153 km \/ approximately 2,332 m climbing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gran Fondo \u2014 222 km \/ approximately 3,583 m climbing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dragon Devil \u2014 298 km \/ approximately 4,504 m climbing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

These figures provide a useful indication of the scale of each challenge, but riders entering in 2027 should check the final route information when the organisers publish it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cymru Classic<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Don’t let the word “Classic” suggest an easy day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At approximately 99 km in the latest configuration, the Cymru Classic still combines substantial climbing with the demanding terrain that gives Dragon Ride its reputation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recent routes have included climbs such as The Bwlch and Rhigos<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For riders taking on their first major mountain sportive, this distance can provide the full Dragon Ride experience without the enormous endurance demands of the longer routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Medio Fondo<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Medio Fondo<\/strong> moves the challenge into serious endurance territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The latest version covered approximately 153 km with more than 2,300 metres of climbing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It included climbs such as The Bwlch, Rhigos, Bwlch Bryn-Rhudd and Glynneath Hill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the type of route where pacing and nutrition become just as important as climbing ability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ride too aggressively during the opening hours and the final part of the course can become considerably harder than expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gran Fondo<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Dragon Ride Gran Fondo<\/strong> is traditionally the event’s most popular route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The latest configuration measured approximately 222 km with more than 3,500 metres of climbing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That makes it a genuine all-day endurance challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recent editions have included major climbs such as The Bwlch, Rhigos and Black Mountain<\/strong>, together with several additional ascents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Completing this distance requires much more than being able to climb quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You need to be able to continue climbing efficiently after several hours on the bike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dragon Devil<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Then there is the Dragon Devil<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the extreme version of Dragon Ride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The latest configuration approached 300 kilometres with around 4,500 metres of climbing<\/strong>, placing it firmly in ultra-endurance territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recent versions have included climbs such as Devil’s Staircase, Black Mountain, Rhigos and The Bwlch<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For most cyclists, completing the Dragon Devil requires specific preparation rather than simply extending normal sportive training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nutrition, pacing and comfort become absolutely critical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rhigos and the Tour de France 2027<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Dragon Ride 2027 has an unusual connection with professional cycling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rhigos Mountain is scheduled to feature in Stage 3 of the 2027 Tour de France Grand D\u00e9part<\/strong>, which will take the professional peloton from Welshpool towards Cardiff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dragon Ride participants will therefore have the opportunity to ride some of the same Welsh roads that the world’s best professional cyclists will tackle during the Tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For cycling fans, that adds another dimension to the 2027 edition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to Train for Dragon Ride 2027<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Dragon Ride preparation should focus on your ability to repeat climbing efforts throughout a long day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Build Endurance Gradually<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Increase the duration of your long rides progressively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The objective isn’t simply to complete a certain number of kilometres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You need to discover how your body, position, equipment and nutrition perform after several hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Train on Repeated Climbs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

One difficult climb followed by an easy ride home doesn’t reproduce Dragon Ride particularly well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try incorporating several substantial climbs into your longer training days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Learning to climb when your legs are already tired is particularly valuable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Practise Pacing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The excitement of a large sportive makes riding too hard during the opening hour surprisingly easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Control your effort early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The longer your chosen Dragon Ride route, the more important this becomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Choosing the Right Gearing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The correct gearing depends on your fitness and chosen route, but Dragon Ride is not an event where most amateur cyclists benefit from unnecessarily large gears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your lowest gear should remain usable after several hours of climbing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Choose gearing for the tired rider you will become later in the event rather than the fresh rider leaving Margam Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bike Setup for Dragon Ride<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Reliability should be one of your priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Check Your Brakes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Long climbs inevitably mean long descents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
