The youngest of the three Grand Cycling Tours<\/strong>. People might think they know a lot about this race, but do they actually know all about it?<\/em> If you are a cycling lover<\/strong> then you can\u2019t miss the chance to know more and more about it, and chances are that you might want to know more about the Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a<\/strong>, and that\u2019s what we will tell you today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How did the Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a began?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Something that we have to say, and as a matter of fact, is quite interesting. Is the fact of how these races started. The Tour de France<\/a> and the Giro d\u2019Italia<\/a><\/strong> share the same aspect. And it\u2019s the fact that the Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a<\/strong> was organized by a newspaper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The youngest of the three Grand Tours<\/strong> first appeared in the world more than 20 years after the Tour de France<\/strong> became one of the most important races in Europe. But that doesn\u2019t mean the race has less importance than the other Grand Tours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The idea of the tour was given by Juan Pujol and Clemente Lopez<\/strong>. Pujol was the director of the newspaper Informaciones<\/strong>, and thanks to them, the Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a<\/strong> became a thing during the early \u201930s.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The very first edition of the race took place in 1935, and it was divided into 14 different stages. More than we were used to seeing in the other Grand Tours<\/strong>. But, shortly after it became an important race, the Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a<\/strong> was suspended on different occasions due to delicate situations taking place in Spain. Nonetheless, it didn\u2019t stop it to become a Grand Tour race<\/strong> as the years passed by.<\/p>\n\n\n

How has the tour changed?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Things change, and when talking about something that\u2019s nearly a hundred years old, we can\u2019t miss the chance to spot some major changes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the beginning, the race only had 14 stages<\/strong>. It was more than the usual stages in other races, but it has evolved a lot nowadays. People can see that in later tours, it evolved and now the Vuelta has 21 stages.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something that is shared with the other Grand Tours<\/strong> is the fact that the race has started abroad on some occasions. But, not as much as the other tours<\/strong>. The Vuelta <\/strong>has only started in other countries in three different years. Also, different from the Giro d\u2019Italia<\/strong> the Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a<\/strong> does not have a prologue<\/em> as sometimes it is called. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The classifications in the Grand Tours<\/strong> don\u2019t change a lot. The system is basically the same in all of them. And so far it has proven to be a pretty accurate system for those who might wonder how it works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also, similar to the other Grand Tours<\/strong>, the Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a has four different classifications<\/strong>. Points, mountains, young riders, and, the most important one, the general classification<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just like the other Grand Tours<\/strong>, cyclists participating in the Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a<\/strong> have the chance to wear a special <\/em>jersey depending on their performance in the race. This is something that can be also seen in the Tour de France and the Giro d\u2019Italia<\/strong>, but with different colors.<\/p>\n\n\n

How often does the Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a take place?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Just like the rest of the Grand Tours, <\/strong>the Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a<\/strong> is held once per year. But on a different date so it won\u2019t collide with the schedule of the other races. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a<\/strong> is held during the second semester of the year. This year’s race will take place during the months of October and September.<\/strong> In case you were wondering, last year\u2019s winner was Primoz Roglic<\/a><\/strong>, who will look to keep this important trophy once again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
