UNBOUND Gravel 2027: what to plan first
Use the official registration page to check the current lottery and other entry options. The organiser offers several distances, so choose the event that matches your preparation. Final route files and rider instructions belong on your pre-travel checklist: use the current edition rather than an older GPX saved on your computer.
Which UNBOUND distance should you choose?
The event family includes 25, 50, 100 and 200 miles, plus XL. For European riders, the first four are approximately 40, 80, 161 and 322 kilometres. The famous 200 is not the only way to experience Emporia’s gravel weekend. Compare your longest recent rides, time available for training and confidence with roadside repairs before choosing. Doubling the distance changes the practical demands of food, water, charging and support, not just the finishing time.
What makes Flint Hills gravel distinctive?
UNBOUND is based around rural Kansas gravel and dirt roads, not a closed-road road race. The official rules describe roads open to traffic and a self-supported endurance ethos. A setup that works on smooth local paths may feel different over a long day on unfamiliar surfaces. Rehearse with loaded bags, check tyre condition and practise the repairs your own wheels require. Choose pressures for your actual tyres, load and conditions rather than copying a professional’s number.
Lottery, entry alternatives and route files
The published lottery window is 1–15 November, with results announced on 21 November. The organiser also lists charity places and selected camp or coaching packages among its entry routes. Availability and conditions differ; consult the registration page before committing to travel. Choose the correct edition and distance when downloading a route: an older GPX is useful background, not confirmation of the 2027 course.
Support crew and navigation: plan them together
The currently published support-crew guide is for 2026. It explains that personal assistance is restricted to designated checkpoints and that riders handle their own navigation. Use this to understand the event’s organisation, then check the 2027 guide for your distance and category when issued. Do not give a driver your race GPX as a support-car itinerary: crew access and rider routes are different things.
Build a short checklist for the bike computer, route transfer, battery life, repair equipment and contact details. Agree what to do if you stop early and which official locations your crew can use. Book accommodation with the journey to Emporia’s start area in mind, allowing time for registration, the All Things Gravel Expo and a short equipment check before race day. That makes the trip an event weekend rather than a rushed arrival at the start line.
Prepare the bike you know
Make your final long training rides a rehearsal for the equipment you intend to take. Ride with your bags, bottles and usual repair kit fitted. Check that you can reach what you need without rearranging the bike at the last minute. A simple photograph of the complete setup makes rebuilding it after travel much easier.
Your gravel travel checklist
- Bike: check tyres, brakes, drivetrain and the fit you already use.
- Navigation: organise your bike computer, mounts, charging cables and current route files.
- Repairs: pack tools and compatible spares you know how to use.
- Clothing: keep your helmet, glasses, gloves and riding shoes together.
- Travel: label your equipment case and keep a packing list for the journey home.
Before packing, lay everything out by use: riding, maintenance, charging and travel. Keep the items you will need first easy to reach. After your last test ride, note any small adjustment while it is fresh in your mind. Preparing the details at home leaves more time to enjoy the event atmosphere when you arrive.
