The Dragon Ride 2027 will bring thousands of cyclists back to the spectacular roads of South Wales for one of the UK’s toughest and most established cycling sportives.

The next edition takes place on Sunday, 13 June 2027, with riders heading into the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) for a day of long climbs, spectacular scenery and serious endurance riding.
More than 4,800 cyclists participated in 2026, and Dragon Ride 2027 will have an additional attraction: riders will climb Rhigos Mountain, which is also scheduled to feature in Stage 3 of the 2027 Tour de France Grand Départ in Wales.
Whether you’re considering the Cymru Classic or attempting the enormous Dragon Devil, preparing your bike, gearing, nutrition and equipment properly can make a significant difference.
This guide explains what you need to know before taking on the Dragon.

Dragon Ride 2027: Date and Key Information
The Dragon Ride 2027 takes place on Sunday, 13 June 2027 in South Wales.
The event traditionally starts and finishes at Margam Park near Port Talbot, before taking riders towards the mountains of Bannau Brycheiniog.
Dragon Ride offers four different challenges, allowing riders to choose anything from a demanding sub-100 km sportive to an extreme endurance challenge approaching 300 km.
The organisers have confirmed that four distances will again be available in 2027, although the final 2027 routes are yet to be confirmed.
You can follow the latest information on the official Dragon Ride website.
Dragon Ride 2027 Routes
For reference, the four route options used for the latest edition are:
Cymru Classic — 99 km / approximately 1,350 m climbing
Medio Fondo — 153 km / approximately 2,332 m climbing
Gran Fondo — 222 km / approximately 3,583 m climbing
Dragon Devil — 298 km / approximately 4,504 m climbing
These figures provide a useful indication of the scale of each challenge, but riders entering in 2027 should check the final route information when the organisers publish it.
Cymru Classic
Don’t let the word “Classic” suggest an easy day.
At approximately 99 km in the latest configuration, the Cymru Classic still combines substantial climbing with the demanding terrain that gives Dragon Ride its reputation.
Recent routes have included climbs such as The Bwlch and Rhigos.
For riders taking on their first major mountain sportive, this distance can provide the full Dragon Ride experience without the enormous endurance demands of the longer routes.
Medio Fondo
The Medio Fondo moves the challenge into serious endurance territory.
The latest version covered approximately 153 km with more than 2,300 metres of climbing.
It included climbs such as The Bwlch, Rhigos, Bwlch Bryn-Rhudd and Glynneath Hill.
This is the type of route where pacing and nutrition become just as important as climbing ability.
Ride too aggressively during the opening hours and the final part of the course can become considerably harder than expected.
Gran Fondo
The Dragon Ride Gran Fondo is traditionally the event’s most popular route.
The latest configuration measured approximately 222 km with more than 3,500 metres of climbing.
That makes it a genuine all-day endurance challenge.
Recent editions have included major climbs such as The Bwlch, Rhigos and Black Mountain, together with several additional ascents.
Completing this distance requires much more than being able to climb quickly.
You need to be able to continue climbing efficiently after several hours on the bike.
Dragon Devil
Then there is the Dragon Devil.
This is the extreme version of Dragon Ride.
The latest configuration approached 300 kilometres with around 4,500 metres of climbing, placing it firmly in ultra-endurance territory.
Recent versions have included climbs such as Devil’s Staircase, Black Mountain, Rhigos and The Bwlch.
For most cyclists, completing the Dragon Devil requires specific preparation rather than simply extending normal sportive training.
Nutrition, pacing and comfort become absolutely critical.
Rhigos and the Tour de France 2027
Dragon Ride 2027 has an unusual connection with professional cycling.
Rhigos Mountain is scheduled to feature in Stage 3 of the 2027 Tour de France Grand Départ, which will take the professional peloton from Welshpool towards Cardiff.
Dragon Ride participants will therefore have the opportunity to ride some of the same Welsh roads that the world’s best professional cyclists will tackle during the Tour.
For cycling fans, that adds another dimension to the 2027 edition.
How to Train for Dragon Ride 2027
Dragon Ride preparation should focus on your ability to repeat climbing efforts throughout a long day.
Build Endurance Gradually
Increase the duration of your long rides progressively.
The objective isn’t simply to complete a certain number of kilometres.
You need to discover how your body, position, equipment and nutrition perform after several hours.
Train on Repeated Climbs
One difficult climb followed by an easy ride home doesn’t reproduce Dragon Ride particularly well.
Try incorporating several substantial climbs into your longer training days.
Learning to climb when your legs are already tired is particularly valuable.
Practise Pacing
The excitement of a large sportive makes riding too hard during the opening hour surprisingly easy.
Control your effort early.
The longer your chosen Dragon Ride route, the more important this becomes.
Choosing the Right Gearing
The correct gearing depends on your fitness and chosen route, but Dragon Ride is not an event where most amateur cyclists benefit from unnecessarily large gears.
Your lowest gear should remain usable after several hours of climbing.
Choose gearing for the tired rider you will become later in the event rather than the fresh rider leaving Margam Park.
Bike Setup for Dragon Ride
Reliability should be one of your priorities.
Check Your Brakes
Long climbs inevitably mean long descents.
Make sure your brake pads, rotors or braking surfaces are in excellent condition and that you are completely comfortable controlling your bike on steep roads.
Inspect Your Tyres
Check for cuts, wear and damage well before event day.
Use tyres and pressures you have already tested rather than experimenting immediately before Dragon Ride.
Check Your Drivetrain
Inspect the chain, cassette and derailleurs and make sure shifting works smoothly across the complete gear range.
If you’re using electronic shifting, charge the batteries before travelling.
Test the Bike After Servicing
If you have the bike professionally serviced before Dragon Ride, ride it afterwards.
A major sportive should never be the first proper test after mechanical work.
Nutrition for a Long Dragon Ride
Nutrition becomes increasingly important as the distance increases.
Start eating and drinking before you feel hungry or depleted.
Use your training rides to establish a routine and identify foods that remain comfortable after several hours.
This becomes particularly important for Gran Fondo and Dragon Devil riders.
The objective is to reach the later climbs with energy still available rather than attempting to recover from a major nutritional deficit.

Personalising Your Bike for Dragon Ride
Thousands of cyclists arriving at a major sportive means thousands of road bikes, helmets and pieces of cycling equipment in the same place.
A small personalised name-and-flag sticker gives your bike an individual identity while recreating one of the details commonly seen on professional race bikes.
Pegatin creates custom cycling stickers featuring your first name, surname and national or regional flag.
Applied discreetly to the top tube, the result looks integrated with the bike rather than like a large decorative graphic.
Discover our guide to bike name stickers or learn why professional cyclists put their name and flag on the top tube.
Where to Put Your Name Sticker
The top tube is the classic position for a cyclist’s name-and-flag sticker.
It is visible without dominating the bike and reproduces the personalised appearance associated with professional race bikes.
Our guide to bike frame name and flag stickers covers placement in more detail.
Another option is the helmet, provided the helmet manufacturer permits adhesive decals on that particular model.

Which Dragon Ride Route Should You Choose?
Choose based on the rider you realistically expect to be in June 2027 rather than simply selecting the biggest number.
The Cymru Classic can already provide a serious mountain sportive.
The Medio Fondo adds substantial endurance demands.
The Gran Fondo requires the ability to climb effectively after many hours.
And the Dragon Devil should be treated as an extreme endurance challenge requiring specific preparation.
There is no lesser achievement in choosing the route that allows you to ride strongly and enjoy the experience.
Final Weeks Before Dragon Ride 2027
By the final weeks, most of the fitness gains should already have been made.
Avoid unnecessary equipment changes.
Make sure your bike works perfectly, test your nutrition, prepare your clothing and arrive rested.
Dragon Ride has been challenging cyclists on the roads of South Wales for more than two decades.
On 13 June 2027, it will be your turn to slay the Dragon.
